What Is Bone Grafting?

When bone loss has occurred as a result of tooth loss, a bone graft can help support the surrounding areas. Over time, the jawbone may shrink, making it impossible to place an implant. Bone grafting is a great solution to this problem.

Common types of bone graft methods include:

  • Tooth extraction site graft: After a tooth extraction, bone graft is placed in the empty socket to prevent shrinkage and to allow for a future implant
  • Onlay grafting: When shrinkage has occurred, bone harvested from the patient's jaw will be used to help support the affected site

For both methods, artificial or natural materials may be used to help support the affected areas.

Understanding Gum Tissue Grafting

When your gums have receded, tissue grafting can help restore them back to a healthy level. Gum recession can occur for a variety of reasons, such as periodontal disease, grinding, and poor health.

The three main types of graft procedures are:

  • Connective-tissue grafts, which use tissue from underneath your palate
  • Free gingival grafts, which use your palate tissue
  • Pedicle grafts, which use tissue from your gums

Our Houston periodontist and her team know which type of tissue graft is right for you, and can help improve your smile through the process.
