A tooth extraction can be fear-inducing for many people, which is why our Houston Periodontist works hard to perform extractions with care. We offer conscious sedation to help patients stay calm and avoid pain. We also provide soothing amenities like hot towels and relaxing music to help you feel like you're in the spa rather than the dentist's office. At Bellaire Periodontics, every tooth extraction is conducted with your comfort in mind.

The Tooth Extraction Process in Houston

There are many reasons why your tooth may need to be extracted. No two patients are the same, and extractions can benefit patients in a lot of different ways.

A tooth extraction may be requested for any of the following reasons:

  • The tooth has become severely damaged due to decay or trauma
  • The tooth is too loose to save, even with a bone graft
  • An extra tooth is blocking other teeth from erupting
  • A baby tooth which hasn't fallen
  • As a necessary procedure for braces
  • Wisdom teeth that are not coming in correctly

During an extraction procedure, your periodontist will loosen the tooth prior to completely removing it with a tool called an elevator. Once the tooth is loosened, forceps are then used to completely extract the tooth from its socket.

The Need for a Surgical Extraction

The aforementioned procedure details a simple extraction. However, sometimes a surgical extraction is needed when the affected tooth is fully (or partially) hidden underneath the gum surface. During a surgical extraction, your periodontist will make a small incision in the gum near the tooth. Depending on the situation, some bone may need to be removed or the tooth may need to be cut in half. After the surgery, you may experience some discomfort, and you may be prescribed medicine to help with pain and swelling.

Following a surgical extraction, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • To reduce swelling, use ice packs around your jaw area
  • Limit your diet to soft and low-temperature foods
  • Rinse with warm salt water 24 hours after the procedure
