Houston Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment

Promoting Healing & Regeneration

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is taken directly from the patient's blood, which contains factors that greatly promote healing. During the healing process, platelets have been found to be one of the first cells to respond, making them a source of interest within the medical community. More specifically, the use of platelet-rich plasma has become more popular within the field of dentistry for its ability to aid in the recovery of oral surgery procedures.

The use of platelet-rich plasma in dentistry offers many benefits, such as:

  • Faster healing times following oral surgery procedures
  • Particularly effective with bone grafting
  • Shortening the recovery period following a tooth extraction for older patients

At Bellaire Periodontics, our Houston periodontist believes in using modern research techniques to provide the best dental care for her patients, and that's why we offer treatments using PRP.

How Does PRP Support Dental Healing?

Platelet-rich plasma, by definition, has a high concentration of platelets relative to the amount of plasma. The platelets within this concentrated substance release alpha granules, which are small particles within the cell that contain growth factors. The growth factors within these granules promote healing at the wound site, helping accelerate bone and tissue repair. These granules are activated by adding thrombin and calcium chloride to PRP, which in turn releases the biological growth factor, PDGF (platelet-derived growth factor). It is PDGF that is responsible for most of the healing properties of PRP.

Some of the ways PDGF promotes healing is by stimulating the following:

  • Chemotaxis: Plays a vital role in cell migration during wound healing
  • Mitogenesis: The triggering mechanism for cell division
  • Replication of stem cells: Stem cells are able to replicate and differentiate into any type of cell in the body

The Houston periodontist at Bellaire Periodontics can help you better understand how PRP can benefit you. We will walk you through the details of your treatment so that you can have the best experience possible.
